What Lies in Dust - Session 17: Massacre House

Dramatis Personae

Alizander Carmelizzia - Human (Varisian) sorcerer
Carlos Santiago - Half-orc (Alkenstarian) wizard
Slavé/Jancen – Tiefling (in guise as a human) rogue

Tavo Dechirent - Human cleric of Pharasma
Vaeden Corleone - Human rogue

Fireday, 21 Kuthona (winter solstice), 4708 A.R.

The party decides to investigate the goings on within the base of the Sisters of Eiseth, the so-called ‘Massacre House’, and retrieve the ashes of Coriana Heavenscape. The night of the winter solstice coaxes out the day and illuminates Westcrown under a waning gibbous moon. The city is uncharacteristically cool and crisp; it puts Alizander in mind of his own Varisia, far to the north yet always near in memory.

The Returners draw their cloaks more tightly over their bodies to keep out the cold. They creep along the ruins and black alleys of the Parego Dospera. In the distance, out of eyesight, a pack of feral dogs fight over some choice morsel. The orange embers of an abandoned fire pulsate in a sheltered alley, sputtering out their last breaths of smoke. There is little life on the streets of the Dospera after dark. Here, separated from the lit streets of the Parego Spera and the dottari patrols, the shadow menace of Westcrown is most keenly felt. Slavé, in guise as Jancen, leads the Returners near the old Church of Erastil, formerly the demesne of the Bastards of Erebus, now the Hellknight Order of the Scourge. The nearness of the Scourge headquarters offers some respite from the oppressive dark of the Dospera at night, well-lit and guarded as it is by Hellknight recruits in scarred breastplates and horned helms. The Returners head past the old church, keeping their eyes focused on the shadows. Every strange sound, every pair of cat’s eyes and glint of moonlight on wet cobbles draws the Returners’ attention.

Finally, the Massacre House looms into view, a six-sided building of black granite, whose slate-shingled roof comes to a sharp triangular peak. The gibbous moon sits atop the peak as if skewered. The Returners draw closer to the northwest entrance. A faint halo of light reveals itself around the heavy rosewood door set within the deep vaulted entryway. Vaeden slowly removes two glass vials from a fold in his coat. He drinks the first and disappears from view as if imploding upon himself. He drinks the second and becomes as the mist. Invisible and gaseous, Vaeden seeps under the doorframe and into Massacre House and enters a preparation chamber of some sort – a room featuring a pair of large tubs flanking a low metal table. Several doorways lead out of the room. Looking through the doors, Vaeden can determine that the central room, at least, is occupied. Two women in crimson and gold robes – one kneeling and praying at a low table, the other sitting in a spartan chair with a leather-bound book in her hands – occupy the room.

Vaeden moves back to the entrance from whence he came and becomes substantial once again. Still invisible, he slowly releases the latch keeping the massive door locked. The latch gives mighty click (at least in Vaeden’s mind) as it releases. He waits for a moment and, not hearing any noise from the room with the Sisters, opens the door. The door creaks on its frame.

“Did you hear that?” asks a voice from the central room.

“Hear what, sister?”

Jancen, Carlos, Alizander, and Tavo move into the room with Vaeden. Jancen stealthily glides into position near a second entrance to the central room. Vaeden moves, still invisible, near the primary entrance to the central room. Alizander steps lightly over the wide planks of the pine floor. Carlos comes in next, carefully testing each footfall so as to avoid any creaking planks, and promptly slams his shoulder into the door frame, causing the heavy rosewood door to swing open and hit the wall with a mighty thwack!

“That, I heard, sister.”

The Returners spring into action, ensuring they are in optimal position when the Sisters of Eiseth come out of the central room. A few moments go by with little happening; Vaeden and Jancen hear movement within the central room, and the sound of another door opening. Finally, Massacre House erupts with action. A crimson-robed Sister comes through the double doors near Vaeden to find herself staring down the double-barrel of Carlos’ wheel-lock pistol. Momentarily confused by the strange weapon, she is unable to avoid the magic missile that erupts from the weapon and takes a hit in her right shoulder. A second Sister follows her, and Vaeden strikes, pivoting around the open door in between the two Sisters. He lunges and stabs out with his short sword at the first Sister, plunging the blade through her spine. The Sister drops in a heap. In the same fluid motion, Vaeden backsteps and rotates the sword’s haft in his hands, jabbing the point behind him and into the hamstring of the second Sister.

A third Sister exits the door near Jancen, who, like Vaeden, responds instantly with a thrust of his short sword. The third Sister proves the faster, however. She rolls to the right out of the blade’s range, twirls in mid-air and loosens a long, bladed scarf from her gold and crimson robes. Still in mid-air, she snaps the scarf at Jancen and wraps its barbed length around his left leg. The Sister lands in a crouch and jerks the scarf towards her, pulling Jancen off his feet and onto the pine floor.

The battle continues for several rounds, with the Returners and the Sisters of Eiseth each seeking the upper hand. Three more Sisters join the battle, but they are no match for the well-prepared Returners. Finally, the Sisters of Eiseth fall under the blades and spells of the Returners.

Gathering their breath and wits, the Returners go about a thorough search of Massacre House. Another large chamber in the upper level of the house reveals the massive furnace used to dispose of the Sisters’ charges – the bodies of those they were hired to kill. The furnace’s denizen – a bound fire elemental – proves to be a practical-minded being. Although at first hostile towards the intruders, Alizander manages to calm the somewhat dimwitted creature by promising to provide more fuel for the furnace than the Sisters recently have, starting with the Sisters themselves. The fire elemental, mollified by its decades of bondage within the furnace, acquiesces readily and begins immolating the bodies of the Sisters as they are fed into the furnace.

Meanwhile, downstairs in Massacre House’s ossuary, Jancen, Carlos, and Vaeden search through hundreds of urns of ashes – the remains of the numerous victims of the Sisters of Eiseth over the centuries. The urns are catalogued by date, and it becomes clear that the Sisters were a force to be feared in the first couple centuries of its existence. The number of urns in the century since Aroden’s fall, however, drops off significantly. Finally, Jancen discovers an urn with the name the Returners are looking for: Coriana Heavenscape, date of death - Gozran, 4608 A.R.

What Lies in Dust - Session 16: The Hellcaller's Cup

Dramatis Personae

Alizander Carmelizzia - Human (Varisian) sorcerer
Carlos Santiago - Half-orc (Alkenstarian) wizard
Slavé/Jancen – Tiefling (in guise as a human) rogue

Tavo Dechirent - Human cleric of Pharasma
Vaeden Corleone - Human rogue

Fireday, 14 Kuthona, 4708 A.R.

The party successfully opens the Wave Door portal and accesses the cache of Pathfinder items in the extradimensional space beyond. Among the items retrieved is a handwritten note penned by the missing (and presumed dead) Loremaster Liriam:

“To Whomever Finds This –

It is, of course, my fervent hope that the reader of this missive is a friend of the Pathfinders. In the days before the madness and riots, before Cheliax tore itself apart, there were signs that the end was coming. Among those was Delvehaven’s desertion by one of her own. I now believe that Ilnerik stole half of the Aohl – the Totemrix – and judging by the growing power and magical potential of the Morrowfall, I fear that Ilnerik has unwittingly exposed himself to magic fell and vile. The power building in the Morrowfall is frightening, and we’ve secured it deep below Delvehaven in a vault called the Amber Arca. If my theory is correct and the Totemrix is a Vyriavaxian relic, then Ilnerik is being exposed to shadowy magic of a great evil. If he hasn’t become a vampire by this time, I fear he soon will. I’ve managed to secure a few tools here should that be the case, and hope to come back later to stash some more in the event of his return, but things grow increasingly dangerous in Westcrown, and I fear that none of us will live to see the end of the year.”

Starday, 15 Kuthona, 4708 A.R.

The party continues investigating the clues found in the Chelish Crux. Slavé reports to his new post at the Order of the Scourge headquarters in the northern ruins of the Parego Dospera. Speaking with Pontia Runario, he learns that the Sisters of Eiseth mentioned in the list of deceased Pathfinders maintains a small base of operations several blocks from the Order’s new headquarters. The Sisters of Eiseth were a once-powerful organization of monastic assassins devoted to the worship of Eiseth, the first erinyes, that has lessened in influence and prestige in the century following Aroden’s death. Still, the cagey folk of the Dospera give the Massacre House, as the Sisters’ base is known, a wide berth, and the group’s reputation for discreetly removing and disposing unwanted individuals is still justly deserved. Slavé takes two Hellknight recruits to scout out Massacre House and receives a less-than-warm reception from the resident Sisters. Slavé does manage to get a good sense of the building’s defenses, however, before being turned away by the Sisters.

Meanwhile, Alizander decides to pay a visit to the Devildrome, the small bloodsport arena just north of the wall separating the northern ruins from the rest of the Parego Dospera, and rumoured to contain the petrified remains of the deceased Pathfinder Aiger Ghaelfin. Alizander speaks to the Devildrome’s owner, Rance Lucca, last surviving member of the fallen Lucca noble family. Rance is a flamboyant and colourful character who recognizes Alizander as the star performer of the Six Trials of Larazod. He takes an immediate liking to the gregarious sorcerer, and through the course of conversation Alizander learns that Rance does indeed possess the bust of Venture-Captain Ghaelfin. Rance agrees to donate the bust to the Returners on one condition – they agree to participate in the Hellcaller’s Cup two days hence. Alizander readily agrees and spends the rest of the afternoon watching the events at the arena. He learns that events in the Devildrome typically involve combats between creatures summoned by dueling conjurers. Rance informs Alizander that in special cases, like the Hellcaller’s Cup, a team that lacks a conjurer may select a champion to face the opponent’s summoned creatures instead. Combatants are permitted to aid their chosen champion (or summoned creatures) via magic and tactical advice once the contest begins. Alizander returns to the safehouse before dark and informs the rest of the Returners of the upcoming contest, and of his intention to enter the fight as the group’s champion.

Moonday, 17 Kuthona, 4708 A.R.

A chill mist arises from the River Adivian on the morning of the Hellcaller’s Cup and lingers until the late morning sun coaxes it away. Spirits at the Devildrome are anything but damp, however, and by noon the arena is full of Wiscrani eager to get a glimpse of the players of the Six Trials of Larazod. Even several of the city’s elite have come out to see the event, including Chammady Drovenge, granddaughter (and only surviving heir, unless rumours of a disfigured and disgraced sibling are to be believed) of Vassindio Drovenge, patriarch of the most powerful noble house in Westcrown. Chammady sits in a private box within the stands, and acknowledges Alizander as he steps onto the field.

Mantrithor Thrax postures on the other side of the arena – his burly figure and intimidating costume of leather straps and heavy buckles suggests a seasoned gladiator more than a crafty wizard. Once the crowd has been worked up into a fevered pitch, Rance Lucca finally makes his introductions, announcing the champion of the Hellcaller’s Cup – Mantrithor Thrax – here to defend his title against the famed Sixfold Players of Larazod!

As the bell sounds, Mantrithor begins summoning hosts of lemure devils from with his protective cage on the north edge of the arena. The lemures attack Alizander relentlessly, tearing at the sorcerer with jagged, claw-like appendages. Alizander manoeuvres amongst the lemures, blasting them with waves of electrical energy, gradually wearing down their numbers. From the cage at the south end of the arena, Vaeden calls out to Alizander, telling him to dip here, pivot there, and strike with precision. Carlos and Tavo assist with spells and tactical advice where they can. Slavé wends his way through the crowd, trading a few choice words with Chammady Drovenge before getting close enough to Mantrithor Thrax that the conjurer can hear him. Slavé begins taunting the wizard, attempting to draw him out of his protective cage and distract him from controlling the lemures. Thrax banters with Slavé and manages to shrug off the rogue’s taunts for a time, but the persistent Slavé finally manages to get into the brash conjurer’s head. Mantrithor snaps and attacks the party directly, using a dimensional warping spell to appear within the arena itself. Mantrithor tries to suffocate Carlos and Tavo – still outside of the arena in the southern enclosure – with a noxious stinking cloud spell. He attempts to dispatch Slavé and Alizander with acid arrows and wild swings of his mithral staff. The crowd cheers wildly, brought to near frenzy at the prospect of a battle between living opponents.

Alas, a failed attempt to blast Alizander in the face goes awry; although his spell fizzles out before hitting the sorcerer, to Mantrithor’s mind, it appears as if Alizander takes an acid arrow full in the face without suffering so much as a scratch. Seemingly struck dumb, Mantrithor submits to Alizander atop the wooden dais in the centre of the arena, ending the Hellcaller’s Cup to raucous applause.

Rance Lucca, overjoyed at the outcome of the event (and secretly pleased that someone was able to dethrone Mantrithor Thrax without killing him), awards the Returners the Hellcaller’s Cup, a golden goblet depicting fighting devils. He departs with the bust of Venture-Captain Aiger Ghaelfin and thanks the party for staying Thrax’s death.

Council of Thieves, Part 3: What Lies in Dust - Session 15: Within the Crux

Dramatis Personae

Alizander Carmelizzia - Human (Varisian) sorcerer
Carlos Santiago - Half-orc (Alkenstarian) wizard
Slavé/Jancen – Tiefling (in guise as a human) rogue

Tavo Dechirent - Human cleric of Pharasma
Vaeden Corleone - Human rogue

Oathday, 29 Neth, 4708 A.R.

Tavo, Vaeden, Carlos, and Alizander return to the Adventurers’ Quarter to recover and nurse their wounds. Tavo accompanies the weak and sickly Vaeden to the Returner’s safehouse and gets Arael’s assistance in attending the rogue’s deadly affliction. When their initial ministrations prove unsuccessful in removing the effects of the mummy rot, Arael scours the city for help and finds it in the form of Barella, a travelling cleric of Arael’s own patron, Iomedae. Barella, a stout and muscular woman with a soft voice at odds with her rough exterior, agrees to aid her fellow brother of the cloth in exchange for a place to lay her head for several nights (in addition to the cost associated with her spellcasting). Barella is successful in removing the mummy’s curse from the near-dead Vaeden, and also cures him of the dreadful effects of the disease.

Jancen, before returning to the Adventurers’ Quarter, finds the Lord-Mayor in his villa and confirms their meeting for the following week. He also finds Crosael and tells the majordomo of Sian’s treachery. Crosael expresses shock at the news and berates herself for not being more diligent when hiring Sian. She is grateful to Jancen for returning the missing bust of Asmodeus.

Fireday, 30 Neth to Wealday, 12 Kuthona, 4708 A.R.

The party takes care of several items of business during this two week period. Nagiphax the Cyclops-kin decides her community would be better served if she remains behind the bar at the Beer Golem Tavern where she can keep an eye on those close to her. She remains a member of the Returners, yet decides not to accompany the party on further forays out of the Adventurers’ Quarter. Carlos scribes several spells into his grimoire and works on crafting magic items; Alizander strolls about the Adventurers’ Quarter extolling the virtues of the Returners and coming dangerously close to running afoul of the dottari on several occasions; Vaeden keeps his ear to the ground and gets a sense of the latest feelings among the former adventurers and disenfranchised nobles in the Quarter; Slavé / Jancen meets with Pontia and is later informed by one of Aberian Arvanxi’s messengers that the Order of the Scourge has been given the permits to establish a small base in the former Church of Erastil in the northern ruins of the city (the former hideout of the Bastards of Erebus); Tavo continues cleaning up the old Church of Erastil until confronted by Hellknights of the Order of the Scourge. Through some careful diplomacy, Tavo manages to broker a deal with the Hellknights and is allowed to stay on at the site as a resident mortician. After all, the Hellknights figure they may rack up a body count being located in the heart of the Dospera.

During this time, the party also consults with Arael, Janiven, and the Pathfinder Ailyn Ghontasavos. Ailyn is overjoyed that the party managed to retrieve the Chelish Crux, and relates once again her story of the Pathfinder Donatalus Bisby and his chronicler, Ilnerik Sivanshin (see session 8 summary), encouraging the party to open the Crux and continue its investigation into the link between the shadow menace and Delvehaven, the old Pathfinder lodge.

Oathday, 13 Kuthona, 4708 A.R.

Alizander is finally successful in deciphering the Chelish Crux puzzle box. The item snaps open, unleashing its contents onto the floor of the Returners’ safehouse. One larger item the size of a chicken rolls under a nearby pew and emits a loud, offensive keening in a raspy female voice. Retrieving the object, the party finds itself in the possession of a disturbing relic – the severed, yet very vociferous and very much alive, head of some devilish female creature. Between curses and epithets screamed in the Infernal language of the Pit, the party learns that, once upon a time, the head was known as Khazrae Kuelata, and that she was a mighty erinyes assassin who ran afoul of her master – the archdevil Moloch. Rather than slay her, Moloch had Khazrae’s body destroyed, wings and all, and left her a talking head so that she could endure perpetual humiliation at the hands of her former comrades. Over the centuries, Moloch tired of the increasingly mad Khazrae, and she was eventually lost in a gamble to a mortal wizard – one Dargentu Vheed, who later became the Lord-Mayor of Westcrown. Khazrae was afforded a place of honour on display in Dargentu’s home, until she finally overstepped her bounds and informed guests of Dargentu’s more delicate indiscretions. Khazrae has languished within the darkness of the Chelish Crux for decades.

Between rage-filled diatribes against Dargentu, Moloch, and every other former associate of Khazrae’s, the party discovers that Dargentu resided within the Pathfinder lodge of Delvehaven, and that Khazrae has some familiarity with the site. Finally, the party tosses the erinyes’ head back in the Chelish Crux, closing it to silence her Infernal ramblings.

The other items found in the Crux include a portfolio (which contains several Delvehaven accounting ledgers, a list of several missing Delvehaven Pathfinders, and a poorly-written poem entitled ‘Cugny’s Wedding’ that Alizander discovers is a cipher leading to a hidden Pathfinder cache at something called the Wave Door), several scrolls and wands, and a silver box containing four grave candles – necromantic items that permit communication with the dead via their mortal remains.

The list of missing Pathfinders identifies some names of interest and possible leads for the party to investigate prior to entering Delvehaven. It’s contents are as follows:

“Mayor Vheed,

Presented below is what I have been able to piece together regarding the Pathfinders who escaped notice after they sealed Delvehaven during the initial riots in the pre-Thrune unpleasantness. After the passage of seventy-some years, it would seem likely that only Sivanshin still lives, and if you wish, I can send my agents north to Nidal to attempt to find him. The use of grave tallow to interrogate those who have been dead these past several decades ironically makes them more available to interview than Sivanshin – provided we can find their remains, of course. I am happy to report that I’ve made some progress in that area.

1. Donatalus Bisby: Leader of the Amber Privateers and one of only two survivors of a journey to darkest Mwangi – he has firsthand knowledge of at least one magical artifact that could serve our needs for control. It would seem Bisby was sealed inside one of Delvehaven’s vaults as the others fled, but I’m unclear if this was a voluntary sacrifice.

2. Ilnerik Sivanshin: Bisby’s chronicler, a half-elf, Sivanshin fled Westcrown a week before Aroden’s Fall. Evidence suggests he fled north, toward Nidal, and with a stolen relic.

3. Coriana Heavenscape: A Westcrown native and, if rumour is to be believed, an aasimar. Coriana remained in Westcrown and organized the Father’s Bulwark, one of many groups of rebels glorious Thrune smashed in the pursuit of establishing order. She was slain and her remains collected by the Sisters of Eiseth – I’ve got them sifting through their holdings in an attempt to find her.

4. Loremaster Liriam: Delvehaven’s master of lore – no other would know more about the vaults below. Alas, no evidence of his survival has surfaced – like Bisby, his remains might still lie within Delvehaven. I do suspect he was the author of “Cugny’s Wedding,” and if so, your suspicion that it is a cipher may well be correct.

5. Venture-Captain Aiger Ghaelfin: Aiger was certainly the one who ordered the sealing of Delvehaven. My earlier research indicated that he planned on fleeing Cheliax for Absalom, but further investigation revealed this to be false. He remained in Westcrown and fought alongside Coriana in the Father’s Bulwark, but was laid low by a Thrune wizard who petrified him and then smashed the resulting statue. Scuttlebut among the blood bookie circuit is that the remains of the man’s petrified body have been in the possession of one of the lesser noble houses involved in bloodsport, but I’ve not yet determined which family (I suspect the Luccas). These filthy has-been nobles play well enough when faced with Thrune’s agents, but without the direct aid of your allies, master, I’m afraid I won’t be able to learn more….”

With the evidence provided by the Chelish Crux, the party decides to start their search by investigating the Wave Door alluded to in the cipher within the ‘Cugny’s Wedding’ poem, hoping to find more information in the cache described by the cipher. With Ailyn’s help, the party determines that the Wave Door is located over the water in Cutlass Cove, about a quarter mile from Delvehaven and Rego Sacero’s eastern shoreline.

Fireday, 14 Kuthona, 4708 A.R.

The party purchases two rowboats and, after greasing the hand of a dottari port-guard, rows out to Cutlass Cove just before sundown. Even with the aid of Alizander’s wayfinder, It takes the group some time to find the location indicated in the poem – some 300 feet northeast of the black-sand beach on Wort Rock – and by the time they do find the spot, the sun is well below the horizon. Before Alizander is able to activate his wayfinder and recite the Delvehaven oath (one of the steps necessary to open the Wave Door), the group is attacked from below the (thankfully calm) waters by three undead shadows – clearly guardians of some sort. Tavo suffers the cold, life-sucking touch of the shadows several times, and falls utterly drained to the planks of the rocking rowboat. Alizander finds himself in the cold night-water, also weakened by the shadows’ deadly touch, before the undead are finally dispatched. Alizander is dragged back into the boat, and the party gathers itself for several moments before the sorcerer illuminates the now-dark cove with his wayfinder and begins to recite the Delvehaven Oath.
